Hope from the Truths of God's Word

A Glimpse of His Tender Love

I’ve been praying for God to help me to experience His love in new ways.  Ephesians 3:19 says:

“May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

That is what I’m asking for!

Last Saturday, I was so excited to visit with my family at the annual community Easter Parade.  My 7 year old nephew, Samuel, has a very gentle spirit. I watched as he approached an older lady named Hope. Hope has cerebral palsy and wheelchair bound. She’s non-verbal and her thin body is twisted.

Samuel walked up to her, wrapped his arms around her neck and held her so tenderly. Then he stood back, talked to her a while, and hugged her again. He repeated the process until he was called away for more celebration fun. It was a “see it to believe it” moment for me. Most adults are kind to Hope from a distance, but I’ve never seen someone embrace her.

I keep replaying the scene in my mind. I believe God is using the image to help me see Him – his gentleness.  As I think of Samuel’s tenderness with Hope, I am remember God’s love for me is unconditional. My Creator knows me inside and out. He’s aware of my broken places, difficulties, and where I don’t measure up to others. And He still draws near to me. I’m desperately dependent on him as Hope is on her sister for everything. But He is just fine with that. Come to think of it, He volunteered to love me knowing what He was getting.

Here are a just a few of His perfect Words of love for you and me:

“How precious are your thoughts about me,O God.  They cannot be numbered!  I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!  And when I wake up, you are still with me!” Psalm 139:17-18 NLT

“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17 NLT

“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart;” Isaiah 40:11 NLT

“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” Isaiah 49:15 NLT

“But then I will win her back once again. I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her there.” Hosea 2:13-15

“We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great  endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.” James 5:11 NLT

I witnessed Samuel’s loving embrace of Hope and in it, I experienced the tender love of God. I am concentrating on seeing God embrace me gently and tenderly this way. Perfect love casts out fear. And I want this truth to eradicate my mind, body, and soul of any trace of the crippling fear that I am not truly known and loved by God this way.

Thank You God for wanting me to know Your love. Thank You for a visual aid I will never forget. I invite you to fulfill this scripture in all those who read this post. Allow each of us to experience Your love in a fresh way. Let Your Spirit within us dispel any lies we have believed about our relationship with you. Bring the Light of Your Truth into our lives and change us by Your love.  Amen

If you’ve experienced His love, please share your story in the comment section below. And if there is another verse that would help us all see the tenderness of God, please share that too. Thanks!

  1. I experience His amazing love for me through you often. So blessed He created you.

  2. Oh, His tenderheartedness toward us is a beautiful thing. KNOWING this about Him gives me the courage to come to Him when I feel my most defeated and inadequate. What a God we have the privilege of serving.

    Okay, here’s a passage…

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. ~ 1 John 4:9-10

Loved your post Jen. Watching my son love people and nature this way also teaches me alot and keeps me humble. It reminds me what Jesus said about little children and how the Kingdom is made of souls like these. I believe that that is why our Lord has commanded us evil and selfish souls to love as He has loved us, because in doing so, in our obedience, our minds are opened to the kind of awesome love He has for us. I think too often we forget this command to love, and in neglecting it fail to experience the infilling of Love by our Father through His holy spirit which attests His love for us and fills us with joy naturally, or supernaturally. I was reminded of this when I read Isaiah Chapter 58. I believe the American Church today has been remiss in this call to Love our neighbor as ourselves and focus too much on what the Lord has done or will do for us. Remember that John said in his epistle that if one claims to know God but does not love his brother, he is a liar and the spirit of God is not in him because God is Love. May the Lord help us to see the glaring inconsistencies in our lives that we choose not to see. He is able to make us stand.
