Hope from the Truths of God's Word

Active Faith and a Dry Path

This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It is a powerful example of active faith in God’s direction. Our worship pastor used it in a great sermon yesterday as he taught on what to do when your Plan A is no longer an option.

“Come here, and listen to the words of the Lord your God.” Joshua 3:9 (God’s Word translation)

“This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly force the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites out of your way. vs. 10

“Watch the ark of the promise of the Lord”   vs. 11

“Choose one man from …” v. 12

“…stand in the water of the Jordan. Then the water flowing from upstream will stop and stand up like a dam.”v 13

“…came to the edge of the Jordan River and set foot in 16the water, the water stopped flowing from upstream. ” v. 16

“Then the people crossed…”  v. 16

“stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan” v. 17

There are many verbs in this short passage.

  • Come here
  • Listen
  • Watch
  • Choose
  • Stand
  • Set foot
  • Crossed
  • Stood firmly

God gave specific instructions. Aren’t you grateful when you get clear direction – no guessing required.!?! But what if the direction calls for radical and illogical action. What do you do? Can you take action knowing there is a sea full of water ahead? Have you ever seen a sea part and people walk through it? If you’ve never seen it, can it still happen?

Moving to Branson was a foot in the water. I did not want to come here. I was afraid there would be no friends or friendliness  at the end of that road for me.

Living weeks at a time away from my husband due to crazy and unforseen results of a economic recession was not listed in our plan. But God! But God has grown our love, our marriage, and our ministry regardless of what sea of circumstances surround us. We are walking on dry land and hope to see the other side of the Jordan soon.

Who are the “ites” you are seeking deliverance from? What radical step of faith have you been called to?

Instead of “if we build it, they will come” – can we live with an active faith that says “If he says it, I will do it”. And trust that He is faithful.

Does logic get in your way? I believe it does for all of us. But look around you, invite God to show you His faithfulness in your past, in your present, and all around you. He can be trusted.

Lord, I invite you to strengthen my faith and help me to plan to say “Yes” to you. Help me and each one reading to seek you for help and follow your instructions. Thank you for being a God who is ready to help. Amen.

  1. Oh my goodness – we are living out the same situation here north of Nashville. God calls us to be active participants in our faith and, although very scary at times, it can also be so much fun! 🙂
