Hope from the Truths of God's Word

Applause, Approval and a Few Questions

I recently watched a group of women gather around an adorable baby girl and shower her with grins, baby talk and applause . The scene is typical when a baby is nearby, but this time I saw something new.

Does God, Jesus and all the angels of Heaven gather together and love on us that way? Could it be that they celebrate our tiniest act of obedience? Do they only celebrate “our” obedience, or does the mere site of us reduce them to grins, sweet soft words and applause?

It’s a brand new perspective for me. And I’m not sure I can point to a verse to prove it’s biblical. Well, Zephaniah 3:17 comes to mind. But I really hope that you will help me find the TRUTH in the verses and stories from the Bible.

God has been helping me to recognize and lay down my need for the approval of others. But I find myself wondering…. how do I know I have God’s approval? When seeking man’s approval, you are expecting a certain response.  To be honest, I know a crowd of people standing around smiling and clapping for me wouldn’t hurt my feelings.  But how do you feel encouraged, or validated by the invisible God?

I would really like your input.  Help me gain a healthy, Godly perspective of how God expresses His love, approval and encouragement.  I’m looking forward to learning from you!

I’m a simple wife who has discovered God’s amazing gift of prayer. Here at Prayerfully Speaking I share my journey of unwrapping this gift. God invites us to ask Him, but His enemy works diligently to keep that from happening. I hope to offer you encouragement to believe God is ready to pour more into your life than you’ve ever imaged.

  1. Great applause for your writing Jen! I think God calls us to be active in our obedience and just as a fruit tree produces fruit, God’s people should produce a crop of good deeds. We may never know what that fruit is, but just do it! John the Baptist came to my mind when I read this…he was obedient and not concerned with winning the approval of the people, but was only concerned with winning the praise of God!

When I need approval or encouragement, Psalms 139:17 & 18 always works for me! How precious are your thoughts about me O God, they cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! That is so mind blowing if you have ever lived on the beach! I think God bends down and listens and smiles with the same enthusiasm we all gather around a new baby…I think HE loves us that much!

  2. Great thoughts, Jennifer – thanks for sharing. I look at you and see a beautiful, successful woman – I’m pretty sure God approves! 🙂

Thanks Heidi. I’m really thankful that He is revealing Himself to me in new ways every day. I know that as I begin to know and experience more of His love for me, I will enjoy more and more peace.

  4. I think God is totally visible. I seem Him very clearly in your life. He is visible through the people that are standing around and smiling at you. When I see people light up with smiles when seeing you at church, it’s not because they have to – they want to. They find joy in your presence, because God’s joy shines through you. I think them smiling back at you is God showing up to give you back the encouragement you give to others.

God is visible in my life when He uses others like you to love me gracefully and gently, regardless of the mistakes I make.

    Good question Jennifer!

In regards to encouragement: This may seem really simple; however, it really works. I pray and ask God to encourage me. It is amazing what He does. Sometimes, I am blown away by how He does this in my life. Sometimes He does it through a family member, a friend, a random person, or just life circumstances. I have come to realize that He is the best source for bringing about encouragement.

As for validation, for me this means first understanding who I am as a woman in the eyes of God. It’s easy to read and write about finding our identity in Christ, another thing to really experience it. Something I am still aspiring to do after twenty-eight years of walking with God. It also means finding my significance and meaning in a relationship lived out daily with Him. I also find that if I am obedient to the things He is calling me to, I feel validated. In other words, I have the confidence that I am doing His will and that is really significant for me.

Angela – those are sweet words to my soul. Thank you so much for teaching me to ask Him for encouragement. It’s amazing how the simplest things escape me. You are a wise woman. I can’t wait to read your book.

  6. Love Zech 3:17, but also Isaiah 49:16 – we are engraved on the palms of His hands. Our names are right there ON Him, where every time He lifts His hands or holds them out toward us, He and we see our names. Awesome! Psalm 17:8 – we are the apple of His eye. He twinkles with delight at us. As I read His words the Holy Spirit in me reinforces the truths. When I’m wondering if God approves, when I’m looking for something tangible, His Spirit whispers truth into my mind and heart. He and His Word are my foundation for what I believe about myself. I also believe God uses people and circumstances to affirm us. We are His hugs, smiles, and words of encouragement to each other.
