The Beauty of Your Mess

beauty of the mess

*Update — the video link is no longer working.

If you’ve been with me very long, you know my heart is to encourage you to keep inviting God into your relationships and even the raw places of your soul. A few weeks ago, I interviewed with Laney Houser for her Learn to Dream Again series and I shared practical ways God has taught me to rely on Him. I just watched the video and to be honest with you, hearing my own story encouraged me. It sounds silly, but it’s true.

In 1 Samuel 7:12, we learn the importance of remembering (even rehearsing) how God has helped us this far.

Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer (which means “the stone of help”), for he said, “Up to this point the LORD has helped us!”

I’ve learned there is great beauty in telling others how I have needed God’s help. The blessings of humility are BIG and they multiply into the lives of other people.

True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. Proverbs 22:4

When we walk through the worst days, it’s difficult to imagine that one day we will look back on them and call them beautiful. That is what I saw in this interview. I saw the beauty that has come from inviting God into my desolate places.

Author Francis Frangipane says, “Because God is with you, every adversity you face will unfold in victory as you maintain your faith in God! David continued, ‘Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies’ (Ps. 23:5). The battle you are in will soon become a meal to you, an experience that will nourish and build you up spiritually.”

Our ability to believe God is able and wants to help us is critical! It grows each time our need collides with His impeccable faithfulness to be our Counselor, Provider, Sustainer, Friend, Encourager, Teacher, Disciplinarian, Shepherd, and so much more.

I pray that my interview with Laney builds your faith in this way. I pray that God uses it to help you ask Him for even more help in your life and relationships. I pray that your faith in God will cause you to soar through adversity trusting God to bring something really beautiful from it. May you find yourself serving others a meal of hope because in your own trial you have tasted and seen God is so good (Psalm 34:8).
