Because of Jesus: Melissa’s Journey

Today, I’m launching a blog series entitled: Because of Jesus.  Too often, we live out our religious traditions and never grasp the love Jesus. He loved us by leaving the perfection of Heaven to become the payment for our punishment. The way Jesus loved out-loud – by His actions – built a bridge for you and me to enjoy a relationship with the One who loved first. I’m pursuing the promise in Ephesians 3:18 – 19 which says:

And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.

To get us started my dear friend, Melissa Scallan, is guest blogging her story of a growing relationship with God and His son Jesus.

Melissa Scallan, reporterOne of my New Year’s resolutions in January was to clean up the clutter in my life. I felt as though I had too much “stuff,” too many unnecessary things filling my house. Not only did I have too many things, they were scattered about in an unorganized way.

I felt as though my spiritual life was in disarray too. I always believed in God, but for various reasons I didn’t feel close to Him.

In early February, a friend invited me to join a Bible study by author Lysa TerKeurst called “Made to Crave,” a course on how we use food to fulfill cravings we have for God. I have struggled with my weight and my emotional attachment to food for years, so I was eager to read the book and join in the discussion with the other women.

During that study and the ones that followed, I learned that God isn’t just a supreme being who created life. He is my father, my comforter, my protector, and He wants to have a relationship with me. I grew up Catholic, and my parents always taught me how important it is to have faith, but I never felt as though I really knew Him.

In the past eight months I have studied the Bible, read His word and felt Him reaching out to me, drawing me closer to Him and revealing His plan for my life. I spend more time talking to God, asking for His guidance and thanking Him for the many blessings He has given me.

Because of Jesus and His love for me, I have come to realize that I am a child of God and worth His time and effort, just like He is worth mine. My spiritual life, much like the closets and spaces in my house, isn’t perfect, but the clutter has been cleared.

What does a relationship with Jesus mean to you? How are you different because He died on the cross and came back to life? Look for more posts in the series. If you’d like to guest post, please leave a comment. Until then, study this list of who you are because of Jesus.

  1. It’s all about HIM!!

  2. What a great series! If only we could understand the greatness of Christ’s love! How much better would we love? How much deeper would we love? How many more of God’s people would we love? How many more of the lost?

Jody – you are so right. Thanks for stopping by the blog and sharing your thoughts.

  3. We fail to comprehend the great love and the incredible sacrifice of Christ on the cross for us. If we could wrap our minds around both of those attributes of Jesus, we’d faithfully and gladly walk closer with Him every day. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Love this… thank you Melissa, what a simple and beautiful article. I particularly love your beginnings, as I had a similar one. It is a wonderful thing to have this journey with Jesus and the desire and ability to share with so many.

    Thanks Jennifer.

  7. Really great new series…I can relate to Melissa’s story. I was brought up in Church but never had a relationship with Jesus–it took a deep depression for me to call on Him to truly be the Lord of my life.

Hey Nancy – So glad you stopped by to visit the new blog series. I’m so grateful to know you and to have seen God work mightily in your life.

  8. I’m excited about this new blog series! I really enjoyed reading Melissa’s post. What an awesome journey she is on. And it’s only just begun.

I think it is really easy to pay “lip service” to the concept of God’s love. Knowing about Him and knowing Him are two entirely different things.

I want to KNOW Him more.

Thanks for prompting us to think about what Jesus has done & does for us, Jen!
