Actively Listening to God

Thankfully God saw fit to introduce me to Becki Dudley. She’s a very special lady and not just because she’s my boss’ wife.  In her I see the gentle, peaceful, love of Jesus. I’ve asked her to share a piece of her Jesus story with us. Enjoy!

I spent many years being “religious” before I understood what being a Christian truly means. I was addicted to being right and doing right. I went to church, studied the Bible, prayed. I thought I was on the right track…

…until I was challenged at a conference to see the Bible as more than just an ancient book of truth. To see it as one way that God is actively speaking to the world TODAY. Scripture says that he is “sustaining all things by his powerful word.” God is constantly speaking…are we listening? I began to read the Bible with a new focus -one of actively listening to God, not just learning what it said about this or that. Was it possible to know God personally? Did he even know who I was? After all, I had been trying to impress him for years – had he noticed?

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds;
and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Luke 11:9-13)

The door opened WIDE! He began to speak into my heart, calm fears, encourage, guide, convict, & remind me daily of his love for me. All I had to do was ask. What else could I do but give him my heart? I had only known him with my head before. I was living life out of a fear of disappointing him. The love changed everything! 1 John 4:18 says “Perfect love casts out all fear!”

This journey toward eternity can be hard at times. But I know that God himself is with me, that he loves me. I am not alone and never will be. You CAN experience peace and joy in the midst of hard times. Real peace and joy. The kind you can’t really put words to – but it comes from understanding that the God who “spoke the universe into being” knows you intimately, loves you deeply, and will ultimately heal you completely.

Jesus is Lord.

Becki Dudley is happlily married to her husband, Tim.  They share 6 adult or nearly adult children and step-children. Becki spends her time managing their home (lovingly dubbed the “Dudley Bed & Breakfast”), and running a small internet based business, She enjoys cooking, gardening, hiking, reading, and good conversation. Whenever a spare minute arises she daydreams of living on a small farm in Northwest Arkansas…

When Teen Suicide Meets the Savior

choose life

Today’s Because of Jesus post is by my beautiful Louisiana friend, Leslie Lamb. The power of Jesus saved her and I’m so thankful!

Everyone has a story, that moment, where life took a turn, where our faith became our eyes, where what we thought we knew of God became so much more than we expected. Some are in the midst of that story, some have yet to experience it, and some, like me, are living out the rest of the story.

I was seventeen years old. I had come to a place in my life where the choice was set before me to live or to die, and I had chosen death. I had been saved at the age of six and baptized at the age of twelve, and I knew that what I was thinking was a sin. But, it didn’t keep me from thinking it, from plotting it, from being convinced that God would understand. Some would say I had given up hope. I hadn’t given up Hope, I had merely lost faith that I could live, or that the life I lived mattered.

Of all the places you imagine Jesus finding you, on the pink tiles of a girls dormitory with a blade to your wrist, is not where you would wish it to be. But that is exactly where I was, and His voice was real. His whisper was intentional. It washed over me like a wave almost tickling my ear. It was strong and powerful, and He only spoke two words, “For Her.”

A happy ending would be to say that I threw down that blade, reached out to God, and I lived happily ever after. The truth is, it was a long climb up a steep hill of pain and realization and healing, but with each step I took, He led me. The journey became a dance. It’s when I began to write, anything and everything. It’s in writing that I heard His voice most clearly. It’s as if the Holy Spirit would come alive through my hands. I wrote out all my problems, my hearts deepest groaning, and my Savior’s answers would find themselves between the lines.  We’re still dancing.

I’m not the greatest writer, anyone can do what I do and probably do it better. I simply write my heart, His heart in me, and my passion is to offer life and hope to another teenage girl that has given up faith that her life matters. Because of Jesus I’m alive, and because I’m alive I live to extend hope to the hopeless, sight to the blind, and long to see the lame dance! I am living for her. See, there is a generation of girls that feel that they will never be invited to dance with the Prince, but I know, they are merely wallflowers. His invitation is for one precious girl at a time. It’s my job to introduce them.

Leslie Lamb is an author and speaker. She is called to educate and to equip teen girls in this generation to live out their callings, to have hope that their lives do have purpose, and to find the encouragement to live out that purpose. She has had 2 teen fiction books, “Kiss, Bang, Boom! Book One: Zella’s Story” and “Paper. Rock. Scissors. Book Two: Celeste’s Confession” published and is working on her third, with many more stories developing. She was just announced as Director of LeadHer Academy – the teen division of a woman’s ministry called LeadHer, developed to encourage and equip women to influence their communities for Christ. She often says “It is out of our pain, God births passion.” and that is exactly why she does what she does. She lives in Louisiana with her husband and two daughters.

the Power of Easter

This Easter, I am wrapping my mind around these two concepts:

“The cross was Jesus’ best day because He did the will of His Father, because He glorified and pleased the Father through His obedience, and because He finished and fulfilled the work the Father sent Him to do. The cross was His best day because it meant the day of salvation, the day of redemption, and the day of our eternal hope.” Roy Lessin, What was Jesus’ Best Day?

and…

“Imagine, the measuring stick of the power promised to us is the same strength that raised the corpse of Jesus Christ from the dead!” Jim Cymbala, Spirit Rising

Holy Spirit Power in Easter

Because of Jesus, we have Easter. We have the counter culture example of Jesus’ love for us and His Father. His obedience that led to a horrific death. And we have the supernatural, unlimited power of the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from a dead man living in us.

I want to grasp the simplicity and the depth of Easter. I want to grasp it so tightly that I can’t help but share it.  I want to grasp it so that I will live humbly in His presence every moment.

He Bends Down to Listen

Enjoy today’s guest post from a dear lady and friend, Judy Groll.

I love the LORD because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath! Psalm 116:1

I walked by the suitcase on the floor of my bedroom several times during the day. My daughter needed me to help with our grand little sweethearts for a few days and upon my return emptying the suitcase was a procrastination of mine. All to do was bending down and pick up the contents; pull out the dirty clothes in the separate bag enclosed and put away the rest of the items. However, I walked on by with more important task around the home to tend to.

A picture of Christ through the scripture above quickly passes my thoughts. Christ never procrastinates because He always has the final answer to our problems in the works. Pulling out the unnecessary nuances from our lives, while showing mercy for our shortcomings, in order to answer our prayers according to His will not ours, is a gift we sometimes walk by focusing more on the length of days until the answer is given than the gift of mercy itself. Because He not only hears my voice but also, bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath.

Just knowing after I pray and seek Him, He bends down to listen, no matter what the circumstance is in my life… gives me the encouragement and motivation each day to overcome all obstacles in my way is a blessing I never want to take for granted. The suitcase and dirty clothes may have been an obstacle in my way each day but just know you are never an obstacle in Jesus’ way. He’s ready to hear your hearts cry, show mercy for your need, listen to every hidden desire and concern, and answer every breath you pray!

He’s Listening…. don’t wait to pray!

Can You Say … “It’s Going to Be a Wonderful Day”?

Thanks to Clara Hinton for sharing this guest post today.

author, Clara Hinton

Mother of eleven bright, beautiful children!  Grandmother of even more!  A home in the mountains with a breathtaking view. A job that is a dream-come-true.  So many friends that it is impossible to feel alone.  Every necessity of life, plus more.  What a wonderful life!

Alcoholic mother.  Forgotten and left behind by a father.  Experiencing the death of a young sister and a stillborn son.  A husband who committed crimes that will keep him imprisoned for the rest of his life.  Sharing the pain of children who must now see their father through prison bars.

Both are honest accounts of my life.  I’ve been blessed beyond words with some incredible mountaintop experiences.  And, I’ve had storms enter my life comparable to tsunamis.

There is something that presses on my heart every day.  Something that I must share with the world, and that something is Jesus.  When I was just twelve years old, I began reading the bible and something incredible happened to me.  I fell in love with a man called Jesus and He has remained the love of my life.  He is the most faithful friend I’ve ever known.  He has shared every one of my joys, and He has given me a rock-solid foundation to stand on when I’m being tossed about by the raging storms of life.

I love sharing the story of my sometimes crazy and not-so-normal life because it gives me the opportunity to share why I can get up every morning and know with absolute certainty that it is going to be a wonderful day of blessings.  Because of Jesus, I can stand in the middle of the biggest messes of life and feel arms wrapped around me with love.  Because of Jesus, I can live!

Finding Joy in the Routine

These thrill me: spontaneous trips, surprises, varied jobs, new friendships.  Adventure! Yes, I’m one of those—a weirdo who thrives on change.   I often get this itch to get in the car and start driving, see  something new and switch up the routine.

But here’s the catch: I’m also a stay-at-home mom of two toddlers.  My life is inundated with monotonous maintenance. Clean up the kitchen, put away the toys, fold the laundry, change the diapers, vacuum the carpet, read the book, stop the fighting, listen to Dora, fix the snacks, again… and again… and again.

After a while, it’s easy to start feeling like a robot—a dusty, rusty robot in need of an oil can.

Life feels dry.

But because of Jesus, I can choose joy and hope and fulfillment through those dry seasons of life.  Because of Jesus, I am enabled to get my eyes off myself and my situation and look to Him and remember that He has blessed me with an abundant life—even when it feels small and routine.

Because of Jesus, my life isn’t dictated by

my circumstances

emotions,

or disappointments.

Because of Jesus, my life has purpose.

And even though wiping a runny nose or reading a story feels mediocre at times,

I have a great opportunity to live a life of sacrifice and glory, and what better adventure is there than that?

Is Today Your Best Day?

Today is Your Best Day by Roy Lessin cover

Let me introduce you to one of my new favorite devotional books: Today is Your Best Dayby Roy Lessin. Roy is the co-founder of DaySpring and their senior writer. Why do I treasure this book so much? Because it shows us how each day IS our best day because of Jesus and despite our circumstances.

Because of Jesus’ Name

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. Philippians 2:9–10 kjv

Jesus’ name is above every name. His name is so great that the Bible gives Him many other names to help us understand how mighty He truly is. Every name that Jesus bears and everything that Jesus is, He is for you. As you go through this day consider His glorious names, and the impact they have upon your life.

The Last Adam: Through His obedience He came to restore to you everything that the first Adam lost through His disobedience.

The Advocate: He is your defending attorney in the courtroom of heaven.

Almighty: He knows no limits to what He can do for you because He is without limitation.

Alpha: He is the first word in every issue that concerns you.

Omega: He is the final word in every issue that concerns you.

Amen: He is the “so be it” to all He directs you to do.

Anointed: He is the one God has chosen to be your all in all.

Apostle: He is the one who established you and upon whom the foundation of your faith is built.

Author: He is writing every chapter of your life and is preparing future editions.

Beloved: He brings you the Father’s heart.

Bishop: He watches over your soul.

Bread of Life: He nurtures and sustains you.

Bridegroom: He’s preparing you for His wedding day.

Bright Morning Star: He is the bright spot in your day.

Captain: He is charting your course and guiding your rudder.

Carpenter: He is preparing a place for you in His Father’s house.

Chief Shepherd: He is leading you to still waters and quiet resting places.

Christ: He is the Lord of your life.

Cornerstone: He is the One you are building your life upon.

Dayspring from on High: He brings new hope to every morning.

Deliverer: He is One who sets you free from the bondage of sin.

Emmanuel: He is God with you.

Express Image of God: He allows you to see the beauty of the Father’s face.

High Priest: He is praying for you and standing before God on your behalf.

Holy One: He is your purity.

Jesus: He is your Savior.

Lamb of God: He is your sacrifice.

Master: He is in control.

Messiah: He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—and He is your God.

Passover: He has provided your redemption.

Propitiation: He has made atonement for you.

Rabbi: He is your teacher.

Refuge: He is your hiding place.

Resurrection: He is your eternal hope.

Regardless of our circumstance, Jesus name is for me and for you.  Jesus name is full of provision, hope, and power. You and I have more than we will ever need because of Jesus.

Healer. Comfort. Everything.

Thanks to Jonathan Pearson for sharing with us how his life has changed by the mysterious and unending love of Jesus.

Because of Jesus.

That really sums up my story, my life, my motivation for living, my decision making, my everything. I’ve been blessed beyond measure and cared for beyond what I deserved.

During my junior year of high school, I began to have a lot of headaches.

Not just normal headaches.

They were rough headaches.

They happened more and more frequently as time went on and took more and more of a toll on my ability to go to school and live a ‘normal’ teenage life. Tears would run down my cheek, I’d often throw up, and I’d spend most of many nights staring at the ceiling in the dark, praying the headache would go away.

And so, my mother eventually did what any good mom would do…

she took me to the doctor.

After seeing several doctors specializing in an array of things, I wound up at a neurologist.

Hearing what every other doctor til that point had said, the neurologist looked at my 17 year old self and my mom and said,

‘We’re going to have to run further tests. It could or could not be a mass of some kind.”

A MASS?!

So, after many different doctors, a ton of tests, and a few months of worry, the test results came back.

NOTHING!

That was great news.

As it turned out, all the confusion and torture was due to a medicine I was on to treat acne.

During that time in my life though…

For that period of waiting to see…

Something happened…

It was like I knew Jesus on a deeper level.

Like He was fighting for me.

He was suffering FOR me.

It was during that time that I saw, felt, heard, and knew Jesus was obviously with me for the first time in my life. I swore I’d spend the rest of my life helping other people know that same Jesus.

And I have… to the best I can.

He’s our healer.

He’s our comfort.

He’s our substitute.

He’s our motivation.

He’s our everything.

Peace When You Have No Control

because of jesus 2 blog badge

Meet Amy! Thanks to my friend Louanne for sharing Amy with me. Amy’s love for Jesus has had a profound effect in my life and I am so grateful. Today I am happy to share her story with you.

I have always been quite self-sufficient. Or so I thought. It’s more likely that God knew I really was not prepared, so He never allowed the storms that I faced to be extremely severe. I thank Him for that blessing. When the first big storm did come to ravage my life, it came in a threat to take the life of one of my children. Self-sufficiency has no footing in a storm of that magnitude. Oh….I tried to fix it. I am the mom and I thought that was my job. I simply did not have the ability. My only refuge was to take shelter under His wing, pray by the blood of Jesus Christ for her healing and let go! As I gave Christ complete control of that situation, a Peace enveloped me. Peace, while facing a threat to your child, can only be described as the peace that passeth all understanding. This is a peace that allows total rest and confidence that all is well, regardless of the storm raging around you. It took a while for me to come to that point, but looking back, I realize the surrender was the easy part. The battle I waged before the surrender was an exhausting, futile effort. A few situations have threatened since then, but I am learning to hand them over quickly. My Heavenly Father has promised His peace for my protection through Christ Jesus. What a precious gift.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Amy has been married to her wonderful husband, Mark, for 26 years.  They have two daughters, Morgan and Taylor.  One son, Payton, and a son-in-law, Trevor.  They lovingly call their home the Clark Ark, acknowledging that God has kept his promises and it just so happens that teenagers, and animals tend to show up 2 x 2. J  God has richly blessed their family in so many ways and they love the opportunity to share these blessings with others.

Satisfied with Simple – a new life

because of jesus 2 blog badge

Regardless of what you’ve heard… people change. Kim Sanders’ life radically changed because of Jesus.

Dive in to Kim’s post and you’ll be inspired by how Jesus’ love changed the focus of her life.

I no longer live! On March 6, 1995, at 2 a.m., I died.  I chose to allow Christ to live in me through the power of His Holy Spirit. I cling to Gal. 2:20, it’s no longer I who live but Christ…

I stopped thinking about things, materialism, buying, wanting. I wanted to give. I became satisfied with simple. I became satisfied with what I had no matter what it was. I stopped wanting.

I stopped living my life according to selfish desires I wanted and started living my life for the desires He put in my heart. I always hated school, but He wanted me to go to school. So I went. I earned a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from an Evangelical University.

I stopped hating and judging people. I loved everyone. My heart was deeply drawn to people, all kinds of people, especially the broken hearted and the mentally ill.

I stopped believing lies. Lies the enemy had told me, lies from the world. The Truth was revealed to me through His Word and revelation.

He led me to disciple broken women who needed love, acceptance, understanding and honor. He taught me how to teach them. He loved them through me.

He developed the Table Rock Freedom Center and asked me to take care of it. He brings the addicted, the broken hearted, the abused, the angry, the deceived, the confused, the mentally ill. He brings them there to be loved and know love. He brings them there to heal, to learn, to discover. He brings them there to find Him so they can truly know the Truth and the Truth can set them Free, (John 8:32).

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God (Jesus) who loved me and gave Himself for me (Gal. 2:20).

He is the only reason I live.

What about you? What is radically different in your life because of Jesus?
