Enough Money to Live Well?

Realizing today how much my thoughts have changed about having things. Buying things. Wanting things.

I used to shop alot. I love the hunt and I love a bargain. Yes – TJMaxx is doing well thanks to me.  But I don’t shop as much anymore, and I’ve been thinking about why. Here are a few things that God has used to change that.

  • I have friends who can not shop for the fun of it. (for the fun of it – ewww – I don’t even like the way that sounds) For that matter, they work really hard to make their money stretch from paycheck to paycheck.
  • Our financial status has changed.
  • I read and taught Crazy Love by Francis Chan.
  • It honors my husband to spend less.
  • I work 45 minutes away from TJMaxx, Walmart, and the rest.
  • I am often too busy to get to those places on the weekend.
  • I have a new mission, vision and goals to accomplish (thanks to the coaching of Bridget Haymond). So my focus is no longer on retail therapy and making things look perfect around the house.
  • God has knitted my heart to Table Rock Freedom Center. The women who live there manage on the personal items that will fit under their bunk bed, in two drawers and a small space in the closet. CON-VICT-ING!

Our small group is studying a book by Ann Graham Lotz, Into the Word. And the lesson today took me to 1 John 3:17: If someone has enough money to  live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion – how can God’s love be in that person.

So – here’s the deal! I have enough money to live well. I am – living well! And I see friends in need. Specifically, Table Rock Freedom Center. It’s a twelve month residential program that helps women overcome life controlling issues. The entire program is based on the transforming power of God’s love.  The program works. I see transformation, redemption and freedom that can only happen when Jesus is invited into a situation.

I want to live with less so that these women have their basic needs met: food, electricity, gasoline, paid professional staff, etc.

What about you?

We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also out to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 1 John 3:16

About Jennifer O. White

I’m a simple wife who has discovered God’s amazing gift of prayer. Here at Prayerfully Speaking I share my journey of unwrapping this gift. God invites us to ask Him, but His enemy works diligently to keep that from happening. I hope to offer you encouragement to believe God is ready to pour more into your life than you’ve ever imaged.
