Receiving His Good Gifts (a prayer from Colossians)

You’ve likely seen a traveler arrive at the airport who is soon greeted by someone holding as sign with his name. The sign helps Mr. Traveler connect with the person who is ready to transport him to the next stop on his journey. That’s what happened in my spirit when my eyes landed on Colossians 1:9-13. The Holy Spirit waved the sign with my name and assured me I was in the right place.

This passage is a prayer filled with incredible gifts for those who live in the light. Reading the list of what Paul asked God to do helps me remember the good gifts in the Kingdom that are already labeled with my name on them.

“So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom[ and forgave our sins.”

The first few times I read this prayer my mind settled into it’s old grooves. I felt compelled to strive to pray hard and with enough sincerity that God would surely decide I was a worthy recipient. Yesterday, I had a bit of a breakthrough and realized God is simply calling my attention to His provision. The Holy Spirit is saying to me, “Hey Jen! You are going to need these things. They are already yours because you are in Christ and highly favored by God. Let me help you put them into action in your upcoming days.”

I believe the Holy Spirit is whispering those same words to you today.

Here’s a list of the provision God has made for us:

  • complete knowledge of His will
  • spiritual wisdom and understanding
  • empowerment to honor and please the Lord
  • empowerment to produce every kind of good fruit
  • spiritual growth
  • increasing knowledge of God
  • strength fueled by God’s power
  • endurance
  • patience
  • joy at maximum capacity
  • ability to always thank God
  • enabled to share in a BIG inheritance
  • certainty that I belong to Him and His people
  • rescued (saved, delivered) from the kingdom of darkness
  • firmly established in God’s Kingdom
  • freedom
  • forgiveness of sins

This is an EPIC list of blessings with our names on it. So … let’s start thanking God for them and asking the Holy Spirit to help us use them.

Let’s decide to say NO to the destructive doubt calling our names. In fact, let’s just tell doubt to leave the house right now.

I’ll meet you at His feet with my hands held out and palms up.

One more gift for you.
