Hope from the Truths of God's Word

Marriage that Lasts

I’m a firm believer that marriages will only thrive when God’s is allowed into the relationship. So many marriages die and others merely survive. I’ve participated in each one of those just described.  My first marriage of only three years ended in divorce. David and I have certainly been through trying years together when we merely “survived” being together.

Fast forward to one week when God’s truth on marriage entered our marriage in two big ways! On Tuesday, our pastor coached the men (including David) in our church on addressing problems in marriage as a team instead of opponents.  Friday night and Saturday, Dr. Gary & Michael Smalley led a marriage seminar at our church. We learned how valuable each of us is to God and how important honor is in marriage. That week was the birth of a new marriage for us.

Each time we’ve chosen to obey God’s Word in our relationship, we’ve opened the door to more peace and joy than we knew was possible. Thank you God for reaching into our lives in such a powerful way and transforming our marriage!

Fast forward to 2011. I work at New Leaf Publishing Group and our company is publishing Dr. Gary & Norma Smalley’s latest book: Four Days to a Forever Marriage – Choosing Love or Anger. The book is amazing. I love that the two of them share very real issues in their marriage and how they’ve overcome them. After forty-seven years of marriage, they know what does and doesn’t work. Here are three amazing quotes from the first chapter that I wish I had learned twenty years ago:

New Book by Dr. Gary SmalleyHonor put into action regardless of the cost = genuine love.

Before marriage, differences attract BUT they may later repel. Value the differences as a gift that brings great balance.

Deciding someone is valuable is a major step in acting out our love for him or her. Love grows out of an attitude of honor.

I’m dedicating this week’s posts to marriage. More from the Smalley’s tomorrow. Until then – what has been your experience with marriage and what piece of advice would you give an engaged or newly married couple?

About Jennifer O. White

I’m a simple wife who has discovered God’s amazing gift of prayer. Here at Prayerfully Speaking I share my journey of unwrapping this gift. God invites us to ask Him, but His enemy works diligently to keep that from happening. I hope to offer you encouragement to believe God is ready to pour more into your life than you’ve ever imaged.

Thanks Steve. That is an amazing quote that describes the sacrifice of Jesus doesn’t it. May God bless your marriage in a jaw-dropping evidence of His glory!

  4. I am certain it will be a most worthwhile book to be read. Your choice of subject area is probably one of the most important in today’s society – a marriage that lasts! Goodness knows the breakup of families is a subject volumes have and could be written about. You are to be commended for your writings on this subject. Know that you and David are both loved by us.
