Hope from the Truths of God's Word

The Gift of Rest

abide in Jesus

It’s one of the busiest seasons of the year. How are you doing?

I wanted to share with you from one of my favorite devotionals, Come Away My Beloved* by Francis J. Roberts. I’m literally feasting on these words. They are critical breaking through strongholds that keep me more focused on doing for God than receiving from Him.

Abide! I began 2016 knowing God wanted me to learn to abide, remain, rest with Him. I chose it as my prayer focus for the entire year. I have so much more to learn about this gift of rest. I have habits of busyness to unlearn. My hyperactive sense of responsibility for the world around me has diminished and I sense God saying, “You can lay down even more of that now, Jennifer.”

Choosing to rest when our culture says, “Do more. Have more. Be more” is challenging.Twitter The choice to really believe these words from Jesus is BRAVE!!

Apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5

The following devotion is written as if God is speaking directly to the reader. I pray this speaks to your heart like it is speaking to mine.

Quiet Pool

Wait upon Me.
Let your life be as a deep, quiet pool.

Let your heart rest in My hand as a bird in a nest.
Let your eyes be still. Let your hands be free.

For then I shall fill all your vision, and then I shall take your hands into Mine and My power shall flow forth into you.

abide in Jesus

If you would only make yourself a place apart, yes, removed from the pressure and turmoil, and there I will meet you. Yes, I wait for your coming.

For I long to pour out My blessings upon you, and I long to give you My fullness. Only be still before Me. Never let the toils and cares of the day rob you of this sweet fellowship with Me.

For I know what you need, and I am concerned about your duties and responsibilities.

You will find your cares vanish, and your load is lightened by an unseen hand. I would have you bring Me your love, and even as you are brining Me your love, I shall in turn bring to you My power, so that I work for you in a twofold measure.

I will give you the power to discharge your duties with greater efficiency. I am actively engaged in working for you in ways you cannot see, to make your path clear, and to bring about things you could never accomplish, and which would otherwise absorb your energies and wear out your patience.

So, I say again … Rest in Me. Wait upon Me. Come apart with Me. Seek My face. Seek My fellowship.

Sweet friend, I pray that the Holy Spirit will help us to do just as we’ve read. May our God help us to resist the hyper-productivity this American culture calls us to. May our Good Shepherd guide us to come away with Him to speak candidly and listen long because He is our very present help. May His Spirit give us eyes to see what can wait so that we choose this very best thing for our souls, for our families, for our work, our futures.

About Jennifer O. White

I'm a simple wife who has discovered God's amazing gift of prayer. Here at Prayerfully Speaking I share my journey of unwrapping this gift. God invites us to ask Him, but His enemy works diligently to keep that from happening. I hope to offer you encouragement to believe God is ready to pour more into your life than you've ever imaged.

Thank you, Jennifer, for the words of peace and teaching us to invite God to a quiet place where just He and we can have a conversation, that it is important to be quiet and listen to what our Father has to say and to rest in Him and seek His will to lay down some things that are good but not of Him for our life.
