Hope from the Truths of God's Word

The Door to Freedom

I’m a recovering perfectionist and people-pleaser.  In the past few weeks, I’ve realized a whole other layer of this in my life. And just like God, He sent His word to renew my mind and set me free from the lies that I have been living by.

Yesterday’s sermon, Everything Jesus Said about Freedom really got my attention. Here are a few notes that woke me up from the people-pleasing sleep walk I find myself in.

Truth is the Door to Freedom in Christ.  (John 8:25-32)

25“Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.

1. You cannot please people.

2. You cannot please people all the time

3. So you might as well please God all the time.

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

1. Truth is not something naturally created within us; it is only found outside of us.

2. Our views are subjective – based on our experience, our emotion, what I think, my opinions.

3. Truth is objective; it can only be found in Jesus!

4. Truth is good for all people, all place, and for all time.

I desire freedom from my people-pleasing habit! I want to replace the lies about people pleasing with the truth God gave me in Jesus. Jesus did not act on the opinions of others. His joy did not depend on whether he was liked or “good enough”. He lived to please God.

Lord Jesus, please help me follow you in living with a purpose to please God. Let your truth continue to light my path and transform me into a person who only conforms to your ways. I need you to do this. I thank you for your unlimited resources from which you will empower me to cross over to the promised land of JOY beyond my earthly circumstances. Let it be, Lord of my life. Let it be.

About Jennifer O. White

I’m a simple wife who has discovered God’s amazing gift of prayer. Here at Prayerfully Speaking I share my journey of unwrapping this gift. God invites us to ask Him, but His enemy works diligently to keep that from happening. I hope to offer you encouragement to believe God is ready to pour more into your life than you’ve ever imaged.

      Thank you Debbie

  2. In hindsight, my desire to please people has only led to exhaustion. How much more rewarding to seek God’s pleasure!

I wholeheartedly understand the “exhaustion” from it. You are right – it is much more reward to seek His pleasure!

  3. Thank you Jennifer. You said it very well!

      thanks Lou!

  4. I loved this….On Sunday, I had my Message bible with me (well, actually, Jon’s cuz it is smaller and fits in my bag =-)…), and I LOVED how it was put there:

“Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”

For me, it made a difference in that moment, because I often can “know” something in my head, but until I “know” it through my whole self (heart, mind, body, spirit, etc), I don’t REALLY “know” it at all! So, to think that if I allow myself to EXPERIENCE the truth (which still requires an act of faith to trust, believe, and act on what God has been telling me), from that active experience (that fully knowing), I WILL BE SET FREE.
So, I take a chance on God. I do those little things (that seemed like mountains) that God has been talking to me about, and I am freed. Already. 2 days in. Incredible.
    Amazing.
