The Landscape of My Life

I love plants. Much of my young life was spent working at my dad’s plant nursery. I will admit to not appreciating plants at the time. We planted row after row of the same plant.

But today I find them beautiful and fascinating. I really enjoy…

  • The different shades of green
  • The unique textures of the leaves
  • The brilliant yellow and orange marigolds against the green
  • Even the brown pine straw makes the green more impressive.

Isn’t it the same with people? This weekend I was in my home town for a funeral. I was joined by immediate family, cousins, aunts, uncles and a large portion of my step family. Former neighbors, Sunday school teachers, and the list goes on.  People drove in from large cities, many still live there along the bayou where I grew up. It was a wonderful mix of people. Many different backgrounds, circumstances, and choices were represented. I stood still during the service and tried to memorize what I saw. The setting and the people.

The landscape of my life is beautiful. Differences are important. They are not wrong, and they are not to be segregated. God must look down on our lives and determine to place us amongst people who are not like us. He knew who to put in my family, and my sphere of influence in order to magnify my uniqueness and theirs.

Confession. For more decades than I will admit here, I have tried to agree with most, look like them, and keep up with what I thought they expected me to be.

Today, I have a new outlook. I want to celebrate the uniqueness He put in me. And allow Him to make the landscape of life around me be more beautiful because I am who He created me to be.
